Female Superhero Movie “Painkiller Jane” to be Directed By The Soska Sister, With no Thanks to DC or Marvel
I’m not a big comic book or superhero fan but a crazy amount of my friends are, so not only do I hear a lot about them, but when Marvel announced female Thor, I saw the uproar it caused. A lot of the commentators on various articles were butthurt men who I’m not quite sure if they were upset about the disruption of canon or if they just couldn’t fathom a woman being strong enough to hold Thor’s hammer. I saw very few supporting the idea.

Even I’m a tad iffy about it. I don’t know enough about the topic to really comment, but it just feels kind of sad to me to have to gender swap a character instead of just giving a female superhero i.e. Black Widow her own movie. (I mean, face it, Scarlett Johansson is badass and she deserves it.) The fact is that neither Marvel nor DC have ever come close to giving a female superhero their own movie and I don’t even want to talk about what I’ve heard about DC comics and their complete inability to have anything to do with the female gender at all.

So while those two are making very little progress, the Soska Sisters (who directed American Mary) have announced they’re directing a “Painkiller Jane” movie. Painkiller Jane is not only a comic book about a female superhero and cop, it’s a comic about a BISEXUAL female superhero. It’s already been adapted in a made for TV movie in 2005, with the heroine being played by Emmanuelle Vaugier (who plays the Morrigan in Lost Girl) but the resources are more extensive this time and I think the world really needs this right now.
While I’m super excited about the fact that’s we’re finally getting a superhero movie focused entirely on the woman, I just wish her reason for being a superhero wasn’t that she was tortured and that gave her super powers. Why couldn’t she have something cool like being bitten by a spider?
In movies and comic books, men frequently seek revenge for death of family or acts against people they love, while women almost always seek revenge for acts that have violated them. How frequently do you see a man in a movie seeking revenge for being tortured? The answer is probably never. The male protagonists always seems to have a mission a la “Taken”.
But anyway, I still feel like this is progress and this is one superhero movie I’m definitely going to see.

It’s really cool a superheroine is getting her own movie. It’s about time! There are characters in other movies, like Black Widow as you mentioned. Scarlett Johansson could more than handle a movie on her own. She’s done it before, so why not with that character? About the Thor gender swap, I actually think it’s pretty neat. I have no idea if it’s been done before with another character, but I think it’s a cool thing to try. But they could also certainly come up with more superhero women, since men dominate the field way too much. And there are some great actresses out there to play them!
