The song “All about that bass” by Meghan Trainor is number 18 on iTunes right now and that is majorly surprising. Why? Because it’s a song about being happy with being what society considers overweight.
It’s refreshing to see a song like that on the itunes charts, especially since songs that are just about the opposite usually dominate it. So I’m all like YAY! Except, I wouldn’t exactly call it a song about body positivity, but more a song about embracing curves. I’m completely all for that, but there have still been a lot of objections to some things said in the song and the direction the video took that I completely agree with, even if I think the topic of the song is a good idea.
A lot of people brought up that the video sort of disses the kind of skinny model looking girl who would generally be seen in magazines, which kind of puts down girls who don’t have “junk in all the right places” as she says in the song. The song also uses the words “skinny bitches”, which is never a good idea.
I don’t at all feel like the song aims to put anyone down, but we really need to stop consistently saying that one body type is better than the other and the whole “boys like a little more booty to hold at night” thing just implies that skinny girls are less desirable and that’s hurtful. I mean, I don’t have a problem with girls who want to look like Barbie unless they’re telling me that I look terrible because I don’t look like Barbie.
Regardless, I still think that the existence of this song and it’s popularity is a positive thing, I just wish the lyrics had gone more along the lines of “Yeah my mama she told me don’t worry about your size, She says boys generally just like booty to hold at night.”
