I grew up thinking that men were from mars and women were from venus. Okay not actually, but I did grow up thinking that our brains were radically different and that men were good at certain things like math and physical activity and women were good at cooking, cleaning and anything home related.
As you can imagine, I was really happy to find out later that those differences I had been told about were mostly a social construct, yet much less happy to find out it didn’t excuse my crappy marks in math class.
I’ve always still wondered though, besides our very obvious biological differences, what are our genetic differences when it comes to skill? Was I the only girl taking “Programming 1” because of some secret special ability boys have that make them better at logic? According to this article, while there are differences between the sexes, the list is not that extensive:
- Women are better at finding lost items
- Men are more likely to detect infidelity
- Women worry much more than men
- Men have better spatial awareness
- Women are better at detecting shades of colours than men are
- Men are better at tolerating sleep deprivation
- Women have been shown to live longer than men
Another article about sex differences talks about how the differences between men and women’s skills when it comes to mathematical abilities and verbal abilities are fairly small. Even with all those differences, the articles states that it’s been proven that women and men are equally good at multitasking and equally as intelligent. So if someone ever tries to tell you the reason behind the wage gap is because of science… show them this article.
