Here’s a really important article that you should all read as soon as possible, because it sheds some light on some of the worst lies and misconceptions levied against sex workers.
Someone once put the issue of sex work to me very aptly; with all of the debate surrounding hot button issues like abortion, one of the main points to take away, in the pro-choice argumentation is: women should be allowed to have full control over themselves, their decisions and their bodies, without the influence or without needing approval from society and patriarchy.
The same idea should apply to sex work. The matter extends beyond whether sex work is morally or legally ‘acceptable.’ None of those things matter – It should be the individual’s choice, and their choice alone, how they choose to utilize their body.
There are so many misconceptions about sex work, most of which are perpetrated by the media and informed by the patriarchal laws surrounding the world’s oldest profession.
The article that I’ve linked to is a good starting point to learn about some of these misconceptions, but is by no means comprehensive or complete. Still, it speaks to our ignorance as a society. I consider myself to be pretty well-educated and well-read in terms of sex and society, but there were a few points that surprised me. For example, the fact that very few sex workers are employed by pimps is something that I was totally unaware of.
Hopefully you’ll read the article and it will inspire you to do some follow-up reading – the world of sex work is often quite cloudy, and its important to have a clear view of it. Hopefully we’ll see the day when sex work is un-stygmatized and people can work in safety and peace.
