There’s a very stranger dichotomy that exists in the US adult trade.
Strippers are celebrated. Porn stars and adult actresses are celebrated. Both trades bring in piles and piles of cash. Yet prostitution is illegal, and sex workers are forced to work in undesirable and often dangerous environments. On top of that, much of their money doesn’t end up in their own bank accounts.
It’s difficult to say why the rift exists between simulating sex for money and actually having sex for money, but it exists, and until prostitution is legalized, we’ll continue to see this dangerous double standard.
This isn’t to say that strippers and porn stars don’t face their own problems and workplace dangers.
Being a stripper is often more glamourized, but with that glamorization, and with the idea of ‘look but don’t touch,’ the woman can often be disassociated from the object. It’s obviously important to remember that these are real women with real lives, who are working a job to make ends meet.
With that in mind, I found it extremely interesting to stumble upon this Tumblr called Stripper Locker Room. Stripper Locker Room is a blog of photos submitted by real strippers as they hang out in their dressing rooms between sets. Though most of the pictures seem like superficial selfies, I find it somehow extremely enlightening to see portraits of strippers while they’re not on stage.
Here is the link to the blog.
Though the majority of the pictures are sort of posed, you can still gather the sense of comradery and even fun and excitement that is pervasive in the dressing rooms. Stripping is extremely hard work, the hours are bad, the environment can suck, but it’s nice to see that these women have a great time doing it, and power to them!
What do you think about this tumblr? I found it to be quite the eye opener!
