When I think of prostitution, I usually have the classic movie depiction ingrained in my mind: people engaging in trysts in the seedy underbelly of cities, renting out cheap, dirty hotel rooms whose sole purpose is to provide a quiet, discreet environment for a quick sexual encounter. And oftentimes, that probably isn’t too far off. Sure, depending on the escort service you use, you might end up at a slightly fancier place, but the concept remains the same. Meet up with prostitute, go to hotel, do the deed, then both parties go on their merry way.
It turns out that prostitution has been keeping up with our modern times, however.
For those that don’t know, Air BnB is a website which allows you to find accommodations around the world. People put their apartments up for short sublets on Air BnB, essentially allowing you to stay in an apartment for weeks at a time, while paying much less than you might at a hotel. I’ve personally used Air BnB when I visited California, and it worked fantastically. The issue is that, since you’re dealing with the tenant directly, the security and quality control can get a bit sketchy.
APARTMENT, OR HORRIBLE SEEDY SEX DEN FOR PROSTITUTES?
Reports have been turning up of people discovering that their apartment was used as a brothel, or as a sex-party destination, and it makes total sense. Going to a hotel draws lots of attention from security, cameras, and so forth. In the safety of some random person’s apartment, you can basically do whatever the hell you want without any real risk of repercussion!
According to the anonymous prostitute interviewed for the NY Post article, escort services can save several hundreds of dollars per night by using AirBnB instead of regular hotels. Of course law enforcement officials are none too pleased about these developments, and are attempting to crack down on these illicit uses of the online service.
Which brings us to a completely different point: if prostitution and brothels were decriminalized, as they’ve started to be in Canada, we wouldn’t really be running into these problems, now would we? Open up some safe, moderated brothels around the city, and you won’t have to worry about people abusing the grey areas to find safe, clean places to ply their trades.
But that’s a battle for another day.
