On February 14th, Ellen Page came out as being gay while speaking at Time to THRIVE, a National LGBTQ conference being held in Las Vegas.
Her coming out continues the recent streak of various high-profile public figures opening up about their sexuality, including NFL draft hopeful Michael Sam.
Ellen Page gave an extremely inspirational and heart-felt speech, which you can watch below. Ellen Page is a great speaker in the first place, and I was extremely touched by her frankness and by the crowd’s reaction to her statements.
I feel personally like we are at an important crossroads for LGBTQ rights – as more and more highly visible people come out as being gay, we will see a continued rise in acceptance and support. Though we can’t rely on celebrity to determine our moral convictions, having celebrities come out or even openly support LGBTQ communities places the issue front and centre in the public consciousness – it’s easy for people to ignore the issue and pretend like persecution doesn’t exist otherwise.
Beyond that, young celebrities like Ellen Page and Michael Sam will provide strong and confident role models for gay youths and people who feel lost and afraid of a potential ‘spotlight’ aimed at their sexuality.
We’re moving in the right direction people!
