When you think about picking up your pre-work coffee, the first thing that comes to mind probably isn’t seeing some woman’s breasts as she serves you your latte.
At least, that’s not what I think about!
Apparently though, I might be the minority if I lived in Washington state. West coast is known for its rich coffee culture, true, but I had no idea that “Bikini Baristas” were such a prevalent thing at coffee stands in Washington.
Of course, the idea of a barista stripping for you at a drive-through window couldn’t possibly exist without controversy and protest, including, in some cases, police intervention. According to news reports, some of the baristas have been performing stripteases for clients without them having even bought coffee. If you’re going to watch college girls strip from the comfort of your car, at least buy a 3$ coffee!
Of course there has also been groups of concerned mothers banding together to protest and attempt to get more serious regulations enforced concerning “bikini barista” culture.
This isn’t a gender thing for me – I don’t think I would like it even if the barista in question was of the hunky male persuasion. It’s not that I don’t like seeing people naked, it’s that I don’t want people’s genitals dangling around all over the place while they’re preparing something I’m going to drink. Strictly a hygiene thing for me.
As long as the women who are showing their bodies are doing so out of their own free will, then I have no issue with it. I don’t want to see a situation where these woman are being coerced into revealing themselves in order to keep a job, because that would certainly be messed up.
What do you think? Is there a place in our coffee culture for a little T&A?
Jezebel did a comprehensive of this study, which can be found here. Very interesting read and phenomenon!
